Rhodes Learning Corridor Strengthens Neighborhood Ties

The Rhodes Learning Corridor (RLC) includes partnerships with the neighborhoods adjacent to campus, four nearby public schools and other neighboring community and educational organizations, in an effort to provide learning opportunities for Rhodes students and to extend these educational opportunities beyond the classroom and into the immediate Memphis community. The Learning Corridor is supported by a group of Rhodes community members called the Rhodes Community Partnership (RCP) Advisory Group.

“I am tremendously pleased with the progress this program has made,” says President William E. Troutt. “The Learning Corridor helps to ensure the attainment of the third imperative of the Rhodes Vision. It has the additional advantage of strengthening our neighborhood by helping area schools remain strong and viable.”

The RLC goals are to:

  • Create more teaching, research and civic engagement opportunities for Rhodes students and faculty through programs integrated into Rhodes curricular and co-curricular activities;
  • Create and sustain mutually respectful and beneficial ongoing partnerships with the neighborhoods adjacent to campus that will lead to a healthy, clean, safe and vibrant community;
  • Improve teaching, learning, interest and performance at Learning Corridor partner institutions and encourage life-long learning among all partners.

The role of the RCP Advisory Group is to:

  • Promote and foster the RLC goals at Rhodes and in the community;
  • Cultivate a community of practice to support and encourage community based teaching, learning and research at Rhodes;
  • Work systematically to ensure that faculty and students have the support they need to participate in community based learning programs.
